Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why are fruit and vegetables considered "imperfect"?
Good question! The truth is that the market's demands regarding the external appearance of fruit and vegetables are very high. This means that when a product is either too small or too big, when the colour is not quite right, or when it appears to have blemishes or marks, these products are no longer "accepted" to be sold in supermarkets. It can also happen that they have become surplus production: which means that our farmers have not been able to sell them through traditional channels. This is where we come in with our network of customers: together we rescue fresh produce and fight food waste as a team.

Are you planning to expand into other areas?
YES! We would love to grow our community to more areas to fight together against food waste. We just need enough people who are interested. If we don't deliver in your area yet, send us an email with your contact details so we can let you know when we expand.
Are your products certified organic?
Although we love organic products and are always looking for an organic option, not all of our farmers are certified organic. And since our main goal is to reduce food waste, we give all farmers a chance. Stay tuned for updates on our products.
Where do imperfect fruits and vegetables come from?
Practically all our products are sourced in Portugal. We make some occasional exceptions (for example, some of our avocado batches come from Spain). Currently, our main growers are in Portugal: Torres Vedras, Lamego, Melides (Alentejo), Aldeias do Pico (Alentejo), Lagoa de Santo André (Alentejo) and Algarve.
Can I choose what is on my basket Equal Food?
At the moment you can choose between a basket with free-range eggs OR a basket vegan with a bag of pleurotus mushrooms. As for the rest of the fresh produce we always do our best to include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to keep everyone happy. These change every week, according to the regional and seasonal harvest. At this time we are not able to accommodate individual preferences.
I have allergies. What should I do?
We strive to accommodate your needs as much as possible and ensure that all of our customers can receive our boxes. However, we are unable to customize the boxes individually at this time.
How do I pause or cancel my Equal Food subscription?
In the login section at the top right of our page if you didn't register for an account during your checkout. You will receive a notification to deactivate your account from that moment on.
If you want to cancel your order after the billing date you have to do so via our e-mail orders@equalfood.co by Sunday 23h59.
